Rock and Roll

You may know Chris Norwood from the Innovation Manchester teams – he’s another blog newbie and he’s been writing content for the charity Forever Manchester – which allows Manchester’s residents and businesses to target and maximise their charitable donations locally. Chris’s first blog entry has a Manchester music theme and features the StoneRoses – can you believe it’s 20 years since their eponymous debut album?? Scary.

Also spooky, because today I was shown around the School of Sound Recording by Wendy Breakell, Director of Education there. SSRs earlier incarnation was Spirit Studios – apparently borne of a conversation between Wendy’s brother and Anthony Wilson in Ten Bar. Spirit was central in the growth of the Manchester Music scene, used by some of the most important producers and bands of the 1980s and is where Sally Cinnamon was penned. It’s a great facility, delivering some great courses and professional work, and most importantly (for me) working with some great young people with REAL potential. One of them apparently advising Hazel Blears on Youth Engagement. If you’re interested in looking around – do get in touch with SSR, I’m sure Wendy will give you the tour! There’s so much talent being nurtured in this, and other schools through MCR, it’s amazing!

With Wendy, was her friend who’s an architect, but is now focusing on photography due to the recession. There must be so many highly skilled built environment and finance professionals not currently working because of the current climate, that it would be fantastic if we could tap into that talent pool for the good of the city. Maybe with a range of small project contracts to allow people to ‘keep their hand in’, such as working on DCLGs Empty Shops scheme launched in Stockport?
