Manchester welcomes the Australian swimmers

Posted on: July 22, 2009

When London won the bid to host the Olympics one of the key pledges the leaders of the bid made was that these Games would benefit the entire country, not just London. Those leaders have spent much of the last four years trying to convince everybody there was some substance to that sentiment. It has not been the easiest of sells.

writes Matt Slater

Last Thursday saw Manchester welcome some rather jet lagged individuals as the Australian Swimming Team were welcomed to the city at an North West Development Agency/Manchester City Council reception at the Hilton Deansgate.

“Well done” to Manchester City Council for attracting the team to adopt Manchester as their new “northern-hemisphere base” for the 2009 Worlds in Rome, the 2012 Games and the 2014 Commonwealths in Glasgow.

Congratulations also to the local businesses, such as Aquasure UK who have already seized innovative opportunities to supply the Aussie team
