A new book reveals Manchester’s less known connections to some of the most important innovations in the history of mankind.

So that’s while they call it Great Britain-how one tiny country gave so much to the world examines how Great Britain,a country that covers less than half of one percent of the Earth’s land mass,is responsible for more than 40% of the world’s great inventions.

Talking to the Manchester Evening News its author Steve Pope,said that

Until I began work for the book, I had no idea that Manchester had so many claims to fame.

Most people know that many of the origins of the computer came from Alan Turing’s work just after the war.

But did you know that television also owes some of its roots.Sir Joseph Tompson discovered electrons, the particles that are used to produces images on the screen.He won the Nobel prize for Physics in 1906

And the contraceptive pill also herald from the city.It was was developed by Herchel Smith, who did much of his research at Manchester University.

How many more innovations will the city produce for the 21st century?
