Why Manchester’s Innovation community should be a more like a super-group than an orchestra.

Back in 1968, Manchester’s Graham Nash, turned his back on the successful career with the Hollies and moved out to the West Coast of America in search of a new musical journey.

He emerged out of the Californian hills as one member of the super group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

It was to this quartet that Dr Cathy Garner, CEO of Manchester Knowledge Capital, speaking at the opening of the Manchester Innovation Boardroom, likened the way in which Manchester’s innovation community should evolve

A community of innovators that is capable of holding great innovators together with the purpose of making Manchester one of the most innovation-friendly cities in Europe but not stifling their individual creativity – to create an awesome effect.

The metaphor was drawn from a NESTA study which looked at the type of leadership that innovation places display. At the time of the study, the authors thought that maybe Manchester’s innovative community was a bit more like an orchestra – with a few conductors co-ordinating many innovators but perhaps limiting its creative potential.

The Innovation Boardroom, like a super-group. will encourage innovators to play their own tune but their most enduring work may be when they come together  and  collaborate on new works.
